Steph Curry's Best Irrelevant Season Ever!

Steph Curry is currently averaging 29.4 points per game, 6 assists per game, 5.5 rebounds per game, 1.3 steals per game while shooting 48% from the field, 41% beyond the three point line, and 93% on free throw attempts. While Godly these numbers are, they are not Curry’s best. But what jumps out to me about Curry’s stats is that he is putting up these numbers at the seasoned age of 32. Very similar to Lebron, Curry is seemingly able to maintain his spectacular play even though he is getting older. All this is great, but there is one issue: The Golden State Warriors aren't very good. The Warriors currently sit in the 10th spot in the western conference standings and with only one month and a half left in the season, their chances to make the playoffs aren't looking very high. At this current rate, it looks like this great individual statistical season may be overshadowed by his team’s mediocracy.

The Dubs are 2.5 games behind the 8th seeded Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs (they’re tied). There is still a window of hope to make the playoffs, but it will be an uphill battle. The Warriors have been sporting a new look this season. They acquired Kelly Oubre in the off-season and drafted James Wiseman. Also, this is the first full season that Andrew Wiggins has suited up in blue and yellow. They lost Klay Thompson indefinitely before the season even started and Draymond got a little bit of a late start. The Warriors sport a 14-9 record at home, but they have struggled thus far on the road losing 18 of 27 games on the road. As a whole this season hasn’t been pretty and the team hasn't been consistent, but Curry has been the bright spot. In his 12th season, he’s playing the most minutes per game in 7 years, and he’s played 42 out of 50 games. If you’re Steve Kerr, what more can you ask for from a 32 year old veteran coming off an injury riddled season?

The Warriors' supporting cast.

Even though the Lakers made the playoffs in 2006, this Warriors 2020-2021 season reminds me of when Kobe Bryant averaged nearly 36 points per game and didn’t win MVP. His team was bounced out of the playoffs in the first round, and Steve Nash, whose team was much more accomplished, went on to win that season’s Maurice Podoloff Trophy. The Black Mamba put up the second highest single game scoring performance ever with 81 points against the Toronto Raptors. This dude averaged 43.6 points per game in January of that season and had a total of 27 games of 40 points or more! One of his many nicknames is "The Assassin" for a reason people! Kobe was on one of the most prolific scoring rampages of all-time and still very few acknowledge that season due to the lack of his team's success. Now, Chef Curry isn’t having quite the statistical season that Vino had in 2005-2006, but he is putting up some of his best scoring numbers ever. He had a 62 point game in a win against the Portland Trailblazers in January, which is the most points he has ever scored in a game and the 2nd highest individual scoring performance by any active player (Devin booker is #1 with 70). Also, In 20 out of the 42 games Curry has suited up in, he has scored at least 30 points and in February he averaged 32 points per game. Get this man some help!

Kobe Bryant scores 81 points on the Toronto Raptors in 2006.

Again, I hope the Warriors are able to make the playoffs, but if I'm being honest, does it really matter? If the Warriors were to make the playoffs, I’m sure similarly to Kobe’s 2005-2006 Lakers, the Dubs would be ousted in the first round amidst some triumphant performances by the Chef himself. So, I guess it kind of sucks to suck for now if you're a Warriors fan. You could also be like me and know that Curry’s days of dominating the league will eventually come to an end, and you just want to see him end his career successfully or atleast, significantly. I do think the Warriors have a chance to have a successful season next year if Klay Thompson is healthy and James Wiseman improves. It will be interesting to see what the Warriors do with Kelly Oubre, Anthony Wiggins, and Draymond Green. I think anyone one of those guys could be dealt away and yes, I did include Draymond on that list. Still, I wonder if Steph Curry’s future with Golden State is set in stone. Could he be traded or signed to another team? Will Lebron try to recruit him to LA in an attempt to combat the ultra-super team talents of the Brooklyn Nets? Who knows, but what is certain is that Steph Curry is having one of his best statistical seasons ever; unfortunately, it seems that it may go down as his most irrelevant.
